The policy for entrance into first grade is that a child must be six years old on or before September 30th to enter the first grade. The parent/guardian of a child who does not meet this criteria may petition for early admission by submitting a written request to the Superintendent of Schools by March 15, prior to the year in question. The Superintendent of Schools will provide a copy of the procedures and a list of information which the Board may consider. Before the Board hears the request, the following information is generally required:
1. Testing completed by SAU 19 personnel. This testing is completed after regular school hours at the parent’s expense.
2. Information regarding the child’s intellectual abilities, social and emotional development, and physical abilities.
3. Written recommendations of a kindergarten teacher or other individuals with specific knowledge of the child’s intellectual, academic and social development.

GOFFSTOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT BUDGET NEWS

For information regarding the Goffstown School District budget for the 2012-2013 school year, please go to the Goffstown School District website or http://goffstown.k12.nh.us/SAU19/index.php/2012-2013-budget-info. This year Ms. McNamee will be teaching first grade. Also, Mrs. Rioux will continue teaching special education this year and Mrs. Lafortune has returned after last year’s maternity leave. We would also like to welcome Kathleen McKernan, who will be a long-term sub, covering for Meagan Nelson while she is on maternity leave!

LUNCH WITH THE PRINCIPAL
Every week, students are chosen to have “Lunch with the Principal”. These students are able to eat their lunch in the office and discuss school and things that interest them. Before the end of lunch, the students listen to a book and talk about the story. Next week, I will be holding our first Lunch With the Principal for the year with students in grades 1 and 2. Students have typically enjoyed this time with the principal and learn that the office isn't such a bad place!

HOMEWORK POLICY
According to the Goffstown School Board Policy IKB-R, which deals with homework, students should have about 10 minutes of homework per grade level each night (second grade – 20 minutes, etc.). Also, all students are expected to read (or be read to) for 20 minutes per night. If your child is having difficulty with his/her homework and requires substantially more than the recommended time, please write a note on the homework paper, informing the teacher of his/her difficulties. This will help us know where your child may be struggling so we can provide extra support and attention.

BES STRING RENTAL NIGHT
We will have our String Rental Night at Mountain View Middle School on Monday, September 26th starting at 6:00 PM in the cafeteria. The form for 3rd and 4th graders interested in joining the string program will be sent home soon. The classes will take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the school day. Ms. Joyce Pang will be their string and music teacher. Please contact Bartlett Elementary School at 623-8088 for more information about the String Program. For student who currently carry a string instrument, please bring it to the string class. Thank you.

SCHOOL DISMISSAL
If your child is to be dismissed from school before the end of the school day or is going home in a different manner, please send a dated note to your child's teacher stating the reason for dismissal, who will be picking up your child, and what time or how they will be going home. Students will not be dismissed from school until the person picking up the student signs him or her out in the office and presents a photo ID. Adults are not to go to the classrooms to pick up their children.

HANNAFORD HELPS SCHOOLS
Hannaford Helps Schools is a program that provides schools an opportunity to raise money for playgrounds, assemblies, etc. When customers purchase participating products at any Hannaford Supermarkets, now through the beginning of December, they will receive “School Dollar” certificates at the register. Just bring these certificates to the school through December 5th and help support the school. A brochure is going home with your child to further explain the program. We appreciate your support.

SCHOOL HOURS
School hours are from 8:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. each day. Staff members are assigned to supervise the playground and the breakfast program beginning at 7:55 a.m. Therefore, children who walk to school or who are driven should arrive on the playground no earlier than 7:55 a.m. Children must not remain on school property after 2:45 unless they are participating in a supervised activity.
Parents who are dropping off their children may use the front circle. Please do not leave your vehicle and be aware of any busses that are trying to enter the school grounds. Students should quickly exit their parent’s car, being aware of other vehicles, and enter the school through the front doors and proceed to the gym. If they are not having breakfast, they will exit through the rear gym doors and join their classmates on the playground. Parents who need to come into the building with their child should park along Mast Road or behind Deep Discount and walk into the building through the front doors. Remember, students do not need to arrive until 8:15 and should not arrive before 7:55!

FREE & REDUCED LUNCH FORMS
Forms for free and reduced lunch have gone home. Please return the form as soon as possible or let us know if you did not receive one. Remember, you can apply for free or reduced hot lunch any time during the year. Also, if you received free or reduced lunch last school year you must still fill out a form for this year.

BIRTHDAY BOOKS
This year students at Bartlett Elementary School will once again be called to the office on their birthday to receive a book chosen especially for them. And remember, this is strictly confidential!

Our Handbook states, “Children who walk to school or who are driven should plan on arriving as close to 8:15 as possible, but no earlier than 7:55 a.m. Children must not remain on school property after 2:45 unless they are participating in a supervised activity.” We have many students who are arriving to an unsupervised building before the appropriate time. Also, students have been hanging around the playground after school. Parents often wonder where their children are and some students are getting into trouble after school. Please help us keep your children safe and help us enforce these rules. Thank you.

GOFFSTOWN PUBLIC KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
Glen Lake School is currently receiving kindergarten registrations for the 2011-2012 school year. During the week of vacation, the building will be closed. You may leave messages on the school’s voice mail or on my web page (dbousquet@goffstown.k12.nh.us). I will be checking my emails periodically during the vacation.

DELAYED OPENINGS

It’s hard to believe but winter weather is just around the corner. If there is a delayed opening because of inclimate weather, school will begin according to the delayed time. For example, if there is a 2-hour delay, classes will begin at 10:15 with playground supervision beginning at 9:55. Buses will pick students up according to delayed time. Breakfast will not be available when school opening is delayed. By the time students arrive, our kitchen staff is already preparing lunch, which will be served just over an hour after the children arrive.

REMINDER

Children should always dress for the weather because they go outside for recess unless the weather is inclement. Children benefit greatly from a few minutes of fresh air and sunshine, even if they just stand next to the building. Clothes worn to school must be worn outside during recess, i.e., coats and boots. The teacher on duty will determine if the weather is favorable for outdoor recess. However, recess is usually indoors when the windchill is below twenty degrees.

NO SCHOOL REMINDER
In honor of Martin Luther King Day, there will be no school on Monday, January 17th.

GOFFSTOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT BUDGET NEWS

The Goffstown Budget Committee Hearing on the School District Budget will be held on Wednesday, January 12th at 7:00 PM at Goffstown High School. Childcare is provided! The Goffstown School District Deliberative Session scheduled for Saturday, February 5th in the Dr. Craig Hieber Auditorium at Goffstown High School will serve to finalize the budget, which will appear on the March ballot. We have decided that our first day has to be low keyed. Students should arrive no earlier than 7:55 am. Students in grades two, three and four will meet in their classrooms. First grade students will meet their teachers in the gym. They will then walk to their classrooms with their teachers when the 8:15 bell rings.
As long as the construction is taking place, when arriving at school, students will go to the gym instead of staying outside for recess. This is to help make sure our students are safe.

School begins on Thursday, September 2nd. The school day is from 8:15 - 2:45. Students should arrive no earlier than 7:55.

I would like to welcome Bartlett's new staff members:
Tiffany Garon - Grade 3
Meagan Nelson - Special Education
Jenelle Daniels - Special Education (LEAP Program)
Brigid Howell - Physical Education

A Parent Survey is going home on the first day with every student. If students ride a bicycle to school, they should walk the bicycle to the bike rack as soon as they enter school property. Because the front gate is closed until afternoon pick up, we are moving the bicycle rack to the front of the building. Students who ride their bikes to school need to come along Mast Road and park their bikes in the rack. In order to deter theft, bicycles should be locked to the rack. We ask students not to ride bikes to school until the rack is in place. Also, for safety reasons, children should wear helmets whenever they ride a bike, rollerblade or skateboard. This is a family activity and everyone is expected to complete the book. As part of this program, there has been a daily trivia question, based on the reading assignment. To help celebrate the completion of this reading program, the students and staff were asked to dress up like Gooney Bird Greene. Everyone enjoyed this story about a young storyteller. We would like to thank the PTA for purchasing a copy of this wonderful book for every student and staff member. We had a rather smooth opening yesterday. I would like to inform you of some of what has been happening at Bartlett during the summer and this fall.

NEW STAFF: I would like to welcome our new staff members to Bartlett Elementary School. They include:
Casey Grondin-Diehl – Special Education
Sarah Bienvenue – Guidance Counselor
Bob Bergeron – Teacher EBD program
Traci Ceccherini – School Psychologist
Beth Coyle – Guidance Counselor EBD program
Carol Chabot – Paraeducator

Also, congratulations to two staff members who got married this summer, Sarah (Frisbie) Mullin and Andrea (Lafortune) Rounds.

Blue Ribbon Award: Yesterday we received notification that Bartlett Elementary School has once again earned the Blue Ribbon School Achievement Award for 2008-2009. This award is given in recognition for the outstanding dedication of its volunteers to the school, students and educational community. Thank you for making this award possible and special thanks to our Volunteer Coordinator, Lisa Lambert, for her hard work and dedication to the school.

Homework: According to the Goffstown School Board Policy IKB-R, students should have about 10 minutes of homework per grade level each night (second grade – 20 minutes, etc.). Also, all students are expected to read (or be read to) for 20 minutes per night. Any child not completing his/her homework will be expected to stay afterschool the following day to finish the assignment. Remember, if your child is having difficulty with his/her homework and requires substantially more than the recommended time, please write a note on the homework paper, informing the teacher of his/her difficulties. This will help us know where your child may be struggling so we can provide extra support and attention.

Reading Incentive Program: Bartlett Elementary School’s library will be organizing a yearlong, school-wide reading incentive program again this year. The kickoff for this program took place at today’s All-School Meeting.

Gooney Bird Greene Reading Program: Today we began a new school-wide reading program. Every family and staff member at Bartlett Elementary School received a copy of the book, Gooney Bird Greene by Lois Lowry along with a suggested schedule to follow. We are hoping this will be a family activity and expect everyone to complete the book. As part of this program, there will be a daily trivia question, based on the reading assignment. When we are finished with the book, there will be a school-wide celebration for everyone who completed the book. As stated earlier, everyone is expected to take part in this reading program. Remember, your child can record the reading on his/her Reading Log.

Hannaford Help Schools: Hannaford Helps Schools is a program that provides schools an opportunity to raise money for playgrounds, assemblies, etc. When customers purchase participating products at any Hannaford Supermarkets, now through the beginning of December, they will receive “School Dollar” certificates at the register. Just bring these certificates to the school through December and help support the school. Ask your friends and family to give you their certificates to bring in. We will be using the money raised for assemblies and other student activities. We appreciate your support.

Memorial Day Program: Bartlett Elementary School held its Memorial Day Program last Tuesday, May 26th. The students sang patriotic songs and recited Memorial Day poems. Also, the third and fourth grade strings students performed songs for the program. I was proud of the students' performance. Special thanks to the students and their teachers, especially music teachers, Mrs. Orcutt and Miss Richard, for their hard work in putting on this performance. I was glad so many families and friends were able to come to see the performance.

Welcome to Bartlett Night for Families of Incoming First Graders: On June 4th, we will be hosting our Welcome to Bartlett Night for families of incoming first graders. Beginning at 6:30, parents will be given the opportunity to learn about our school and programs while our new first graders have a tour of the school and participate in some fun activities. If you haven’t registered your child yet, please call the school at 623-8088 to begin the registration process. A child must be six years old on or before September 30th to enter the first grade.

Bartlett Bash: On Friday, June 19th, we will be holding our annual Bartlett Bash. The festivities will be held throughout the day. Some of the activities planned include outdoor games and crafts. Every student will be treated to a pizza lunch and then will enjoy a movie in the afternoon. Bartlett Bash has always been an enjoyable, end-of-the-year activity.

Fourth Grade Farewell: The Fourth Grade Farewell has been scheduled for Monday, June 22nd in the Bartlett Elementary School gym. The Farewell is a chance for us to say goodbye to the fourth graders before they leave for the fifth grade at Mountain View Middle School.

Last Day of School ???: At this point, Wednesday, June 24th will be the last day of school. We will be offering school lunch and students will be dismissed at 12:45.

New From the Principal

Winn-Dixie Reading Program: We are very pleased with how well our new school-wide reading program has been received. Everyone is expected to finish the book on April 13th and there will be a school-wide celebration for everyone who completed the book. During the November 4th’s elections, students were given the opportunity to participate in the Kids Voting program at Bartlett Elementary. Pinardville students were able to come to school to vote for president and some items that pertain to them. The results of the election were:
Who do you want for our next president? Barack Obama
What is your favorite lunch? Fun Fish Nuggets
What is your favorite thing on our new playground? Infinity Web
What was your favorite Jennifer Ericsson picture book? She Did It!
What color do you want the 100-day reader t-shirt to be? Lime Green
What is your favorite sports team? The Red Sox

Reminder: Next Wednesday, November 26th, is an Early Release Day, in which students will be dismissed at 12:45. This will give families a head start to enjoy their Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Lunch: I would like to thank our cafeteria staff, Cheryl Nault, Denise Ouellette and Jennifer Kaminski and their volunteers for serving the students a delicious Thanksgiving meal yesterday. Each student was given a free meal that included turkey, sweet potato, mashed potatoes, stuffing, vegetables, gravy, rolls and pie for dessert. We are truly thankful for everything our cafeteria staff does for the students each and every day.

Early Release (Dec. 3) & Delayed Opening (Dec. 4) for Parent-Teacher Conferences: Please remember that we will be having Parent-Teacher Conferences the week after Thanksgiving. This is a good way of finding out how your child has adjusted to school after the first trimester and is progressing academically, socially and behaviorally. If you haven’t already, please contact your child’s teacher to schedule your conference. And remember, if you have any questions or concerns during the year, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher to set up another conference.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

News From the Principal

Author Visit: On Wednesday, author Jennifer Ericsson visited Bartlett Elementary School. The food items collected have assisted in providing help to Goffstown area families each year during the holidays. Filling baskets requires numerous donations of non-perishable food items.
This is truly a community effort and volunteers are needed to make these programs a success. We will be participating in the collection effort by accepting food through the month of November. Suggested donated items include canned vegetables and soups, pasta, tomato sauce, peanut butter and jelly, tuna and canned meats, canned fruits and juices, rice and cereal. So bring in your non-perishable food items and help in this worthy event.

Picture Retake: School pictures went home last week. If you are unsatisfied with your child’s school picture or if your child was absent on picture day, a picture retake day has been scheduled for Thursday, November 6th. In order to have pictures retaken, the complete original packet needs to be returned. If your child’s picture was not taken and you need a new order form, please let us know and we will get one to you.

Hannaford Help Schools: Hannaford Helps Schools is a program that provides schools an opportunity to raise money for playgrounds, assemblies, etc. When customers purchase participating products at any Hannaford Supermarkets, now through December 4th, they will receive “School Dollar” certificates at the register. Just bring these certificates to the school by December 12th and help support the school. Ask your friends and family to give you their certificates to bring in. We will be using the money raised for assemblies and other student activities. We appreciate your support.

Bartlett News

Bartlett Renovations: During the past couple of weeks, the renovations to the school have been flying! More information will be coming home soon.

Halloween Parade: In keeping with tradition, the students of Bartlett Elementary School will participate in the Halloween Parade on Wednesday, October 31st in Goffstown Center. The students will be transported by bus to Maple Ave. School and the parade will begin around 1:15. The students will march through the center of Goffstown to St. Lawrence Church and then return for the bus ride back to school. Students will return to Bartlett around 2:30. We ask that students who wish to dress up should bring their costume in a bag with their name on it. Costumes that can be worn over regular clothes are easier for students to put on. Changing time and space is limited. We also ask that no weapons such as fake guns, knives, swords, etc. be included in school costumes.
